Sculpture commissioned by the National Heritage Monument(NHM) and was a collaboration with Tania Lee.
‘Kader Asmal’ is sculpture number 101 and part of a large procession of bronzes called ‘The Long March to Freedom'(Century City/Cape Town) celebrating the South Africa’s known and unsung heroes of the past 3 centuries who did their part in the struggle for human rights and dignity.
It was a very special honour to sculpt the likeness of Asmal(former Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry and then later as Education Minister) specifically because we know some of the family members. Their stories really helped us imagine and portrait his unique personality traits and mannerisms. The delighted reaction of his nearest friends and colleagues at the unveiling was a real confirmation that we managed to capture something of his essence.
Unveiled 5th December 2024
