Why are your Hands White?

This sculpture is of my daughter and her Kindergarten friend Prudence. There is a sweet innocence in the question, but it is the start of a conversation that will develop as these two friends grow. South Africa’s history is marred by racial and cultural rifts and in order to bridge these divides individuals must face each other as human beings with open hands and respect to continue this disarming conversation. It is my hope that this artwork challenges the viewer to consider what prejudices they have been taught and are perpetuating around individuals from different cultures and to consciously take steps to eradicate the illusion of ‘otherness’.
